Swallows - May 2014

Swallows - May 2014

Tried to get some photos of the 3 different breeds of Swallows that we see regularly on our local outings.
Managed to photos of Banks Swallows for the first time and photos of Tree Swallows. The Northern Rough Wing Swallows did not put in an appearance and are much more difficult to see as their nesting location is not visible from our side of the river.
This was the first time I've seen Bank Swallows roosting on the fence. Trying to get photos of them in flight is more difficult as they are usually further out in the field.

Orioles - May 26 2014

Monday 26 May 2014

Orioles
The first few days the Orioles were here they were ravenous and were eating everything is sight.
They have since settled in to their constant bickering and fighting. They are happy with the nectar we put out and we added jelly and jam to the menu this year.
I used two Tassimo coffee disks, drilled out the center and they fit nicely on our shepherds hook feeding pole. The bottom disk is filled with water to keep the ants away from the Orioles food. I then mounted another disk about 6 inches higher and we fill it with grape jelly or Saskatoon berry jam. The Orioles really like it and eat at least 2 tablespoons a day.
I have to fill the water barrier every day and the jelly/jam disk twice a day.
I tried putting out fresh fruit for them in the past but they just ignore it and go for the nectar.

Bird Photos - May 23 2014

23 May 2014

Another great walk today, not as many Warblers around, but still quite a few Flycatchers.
Saw an Alder Flycatcher that had caught a Bee.
Saw a Mallard go after a young Hooded Merganser
A Robin dove out of a tree from behind and appeared right in front of my face, I was certain I was about to get my face clawed by a Hawk. Only as the Robin flew away did I realize it was a Robin.
Redstart photos are not the best as they just don't sit still, if these birds had pants they would definitely have ants in them.
Lots of Gray Catbirds around, couldn't walk 20 feet without seeing at least one.

21 May 2014

More photos from the last few days.
Lots of warblers and Flycatchers moving through the last few days.
One Baltimore Oriole showed up a week ago, several more have arrived since the weekend. There are at least 7 fighting at our feeders off and on during the day.
One Orchard Oriole put in an appearance today but seemed to be overwhelmed by the number of squabbling Baltimore Orioles and hasn't come back.
